- Named in honour of Herbert Swire, a naval officer on the 19th-century HMS Challenger expedition, a pioneer of deep-sea exploration.
- Discovered during expeditions in 2014 and 2017 aboard the research vessel Falkor, before being formally described as a new species in 2017.
